Memorial Day is a day of reverence for me. I grew up in a house where my father, grandfathers and several uncles served in the military. I was taught to honor our flag and respect those that defend our freedoms. I hope you take the time this weekend to appreciate those who have sacrificed so much on our behalf for our country and find fond memories of those who have gone ahead.
The past couple of weeks have been such a great experience for me to join in the Wordless Wednesday Link Party with all the great bloggers at Oh My Heartsie Girl. I have learned so much about me and I have really assessed where I want to be in a year with this blog. I am so happy to share with you all the great things that these talented ladies have. Today I want to touch on making your goals measurable. It’s easy to say that I’m going to do something, but without accountability and a way to track your progress you probably won’t stick with it. The whole idea of having a dream and turning it into a goal is to follow through. I created a little worksheet that you can print out that you can use to follow my path of attaining your dreams. Goal Setting Worksheet. Fill it out and put it somewhere that you can review it and look at it everyday.

So, following along with my goal to lose 10 pounds I am going to break apart how to measure my progress by putting together an action plan:
- Goal: I am going to weigh and measure myself starting today
- Action: I will re-measure and weigh in 2 weeks
- due date: today and again in 2 weeks
- Goal: I am going to track my calories each day
- Action: I will download a tracking ap on my phone
- due date: Today
- Goal: Eat 100 calories per hour for the next 2 weeks; not to exceed 1300 calories per day
- Action: research dinners under 400 calories and plan 2 weeks of meals
- due date: 2 days
- Action: write down and purchase veggies, fruits and snacks that are 100 calories or less
- due date: 2 days
- Action: Go Shopping
- due date: 2 days
- I am going to fill out **my health assessment** as I begin so that I can compare in 2 weeks.
- Action: Fill out my health assessment
- due date: 2 days
- Action: Fill out 2 week health assessment
- due date: 2 weeks
- Goal: I am going to take my before picture
- Action: take before picture
- due date: Today
- I am going to exercise 2-3 days for 30 minutes each day for the next 2 weeks.
- Action: set myself 30 minutes out of my day for 2-3 days on my calendar: make a date with myself
- due date: Today
So, I have my goals figured out and an action plan in place to carry out those goals. At the end of my 2 weeks am going to assess myself based on what I accomplished/didn’t accomplish and measure if I achieved my plan of action for the 2 week span.
At the bottom of my Goal Setting Worksheet I ask, is this realistic? Stop for a minute and think about whether what you have set for yourself is realistic. Maybe you need to finish something in 2 weeks that you have only given yourself 2 days to do. Maybe you need to break one action into several to make it more realistic. When you have completed your actions and accomplished them write the date in BIG BOLD writing at the bottom so you know you achieved what you set out to do.
This helps you feel better about your success and gives you incentive to grab the next set of tasks and accomplish them as well. At the end, in my case in 2 weeks, start a new sheet with new action items and tasks to complete to work toward your ultimate goal or, if you achieved what you dream of give yourself a big pat on the back and move to your next dream.
Ideally you should set specific dates “this Friday” “June 17” as your due dates. This is just a quick example. Now, let’s get to work!

I’m going to use my dream of loosing weight as an example.
First to accomplish our dreams we need to set some goals. It is best to set less than 5-7 goals at a time. More than that makes your achievement more overwhelming and difficult. I like the SMART goals analogy as a basis; however, I do like to break my bigger goals into smaller, easier to obtain goals.
So, Let’s be Specific: I want to lose weight. Give yourself a small paragraph about your dream adding as much detail as possible: I want to lose 10 pounds this year.
Now is when you start asking yourself questions. Who, what, when, where and why?
Who is involved in your goal: in my case my entire family is involved as my change will impact them directly
What does your goal need to be achieved: I need to exercise 30 minutes a day 2-3 days a week to start. I need to eat less portions or healthier meals. (your what may result in a few smaller goals. This is a good thing- smaller goals are often easier to break down and achieve. If this is you take each one of your what’s and turn them into a goal in and of themselves)
So, now I want to lose 10 pounds, but I have more specific goals of exercising for 30 minutes a day for 2-3 days a week and I am going to eat smaller portions and look for healthier meals to prepare. I’ll then break those down into smaller goals. Remember keep your goals at less than 5-7 so you don’t lose your mind.
So, now breaking down exercise:
When are you going to do it: I am going to take 10 minutes 3 times a day during my breaks at work to achieve my exercise goal
Where: sometimes the where doesn’t apply, in my case it will be walking outside the building or up the stairs 3-4 times a day.
Why: This is a big one for your dreams/goals. Why do you want to achieve your dreams. Often it is our why that moves us forward. It is our why that gives us the motivation to follow through with our plans. Your why is what you want to display so you can see it daily. My why: I want to be healthy and feel good so I can run around the yard with my kids, chase them on the slide, hike the trails that we explore and feel good about me so I can emit that feeling of happiness and being content with me to my family.
Take some time and really write out your specifics, earnestly ask yourself the who, what, when, where and why questions…. I’ll be back in a few days to discuss how we make our goals measurable.

Today I want to talk a little bit about setting goals that you can follow and achieve. When I began this blog it started out as a place where I could write to start a portfolio. I had the intention of a place where I could point people to for freelance writing jobs that I had been applying for. As I began reading more about blogging and how to get your blog noticed, I realized that I wanted to add to my goal. Last week as I sat down to write a post I also realized that I had not set ANY goals for myself and this blog. So, with a little bit of a new direction for myself this morning I would like to walk through goals step-by-step and take you along the journey with me.
Today, let’s start with your DREAMS… What do you want your end result to be? Without knowing what the end result will be you won’t know where to start. Today I want you to just DREAM. Dream of your future, dream of what you want to achieve, dream of what you want to have, who you want to be, what you want to look like. Perhaps you have a lot of dreams. I know that I do. Take 10 minutes in the next couple of days and write down your dreams.
- I dream of writing a book
- I dream of loosing 10 pounds
- I dream of being home for my children
Our dreams often get lost in dream land. Let’s work together to bring them into reality.

One thing that I am passionate about is preparedness. It stems from my childhood I suppose. When I was 12 my father was injured badly at work and our family went through a very rough time. I was old enough to know that there was no money to buy food, and scared to think that the meal I just ate may be the last. Luckily, I had not paid attention to the storage room in our basement. It was creepy and there were little crawlies all over so I was not about to go down there and get attacked by something with 8 little legs.
My grandmother, an advocate of storing food for a rainy day had helped us prepare our family for those tough times. Those rainy days during that time of my life taught me a valuable lesson about being prepared for the worst and appreciating the best of times.
About 4 years ago I was introduced to Thrive Life. The flavor of their food impressed me. I jumped on board and have not regretted that I did. I use their products at least 3 times per week in the meals that I prepare for my family (sometimes everyday).
The biggest thing that I have realized is that we, as a society, are not in the mind-set for planning for the future. I’ve spoken to many people who say sure I have food storage, but they don’t know what they have or how it tastes. Or, they don’t know where to begin or even care that they should. We often think of the need for food storage in a major disaster and forget about the small things that creep into our lives daily.
